Date.com, well just the name really says it all doesn’t it? This obviously is one of the premier domain names for operating an online dating site. This site was originally launched in 1998, and then did a bit of restructuring and re-launched on February 14th, 2000. Date.com is not as big as the other sites, but now has over 2.5 million members, and claimed responsibility for more than 80 marriages last year! Date.com is one of those sites that has a fairly even ratio of member demographics: female members at 45% and male member at 55%. This is a good sign, as a lot of the other dating sites have a more male orientated presence, some reaching as high as 65 to 70%. So this is great for any of the guys who are thinking of finding a date by joining Date.com.
Date.com comes with all the usual bells and whistles and great features that you would expect from a major online dating site. One feature however that is not available is for free members to be able to reply via email to other members, even if you received that email from another member. So if you’re in the free member mode, some admirer sends you an email message, if you want to answer back, you will have to register to become a member yourself. Other dating sites (well, some of them), allow their free members to correspond to the e-mails they’re sent. So not being able to do this on Date.com can be a bit of a hindrance when finding a date, as some free members just can’t afford to upgrade. Also members who sent the email will not get a reply back as they have no idea whether that person is a member or not. If you like the presentation of Date.com, you may also want to check out Matchmaker.com, which is operated by the same online company. The sites are similar, however, Matchmaker does allow it’s free members to reply to their emails!
One great feature offered by Date.com is their vibrant chat rooms, which is always actively buzzing with excitement. These chat rooms are divided into different groups based on: hobbies, geographical location, likes and dislikes, etc. If you don’t like any of the chat rooms available, heck, then you can start your own and see who you can attract. As a paid member you can also use private chat rooms with any other member that interests you by just double-clicking on their user-name on the menu. This will instantly pop open a new window so you can converse in real time with each other privately, can’t get anymore romantic than that, right?
When you first arrive at the Date.com site, it appears that you can’t browse their site to see if there’s anyone local in your area that you can view before registering as a free member. But that’s not so, near the bottom of the site, there are links marked “Personals” and “Dating”. The “Personals’ link goes to a page where you can browse through member profiles either by State or Province (in the US and Canada only) and the ‘Dating’ link leads to a page where you will be able to view member profiles by major cities (in the US and Canada, the UK and Europe). You can also filter out these profiles by gender, but not age. This will at the very least give you some idea of who’s available online in your immediate area before you sign-up as a free member! Why Date.com has decided to locate these links in those areas, is a good question.
When you eventually join as a member on Date.com, it also gives you access to their web ezine located at Date.info. This is full of useful information, tips and love advice for anyone interested in online dating. There is advice on creating a great jaw dropping profile that will attract attention, to advice on making a fantastic unforgettable first impression when emailing someone you like for the very first time. Unlike the online ezines that are available from other dating sites, Date.info is actually interesting and informative to read. There are contributions from other members where you can read their diary of all their successes, as well as failures, to relevant articles and tips from those professionals active in the online dating scene. A copy of Date.info’s weekly e-zine is sent to you via e-mail, unless of course you choose not to receive it. Those members of Matchmaker.com will also have access to Date.info’s ezine.
